What's new in Glendale's German dual immersion program?

Enroll now for September 2009

The Glendale Unified School District is proud to offer a free German dual immersion program

as part of the Foreign Language Academies of Glendale (FLAG).

kindergarteners

  • This public school program is located at Franklin Elementary and is planned as a K-6 program, with the hope to move up into middle and high school with advanced German language classes.

  • Students are taught German by native or native-like speakers who are credentialed California teachers.

  • The program adheres to California State and National Standards.

  • Students from outside the District may attend with a permit

  • Prior knowledge of German is not required.

In a 90/10 program, K and 1st are taught primarily in German by a credentialed teacher, fluent in German and English.

  • The children may speak or respond in either language,  but the teacher will speak only German during the 90% of the day in which that language is taught.

  • The teacher will guide students to correct vocabulary, pronunciation, and sentence structure by modeling.  German is taught largely through the content studied, not as a separate subject.

  • As the students progress through grade levels, the percentage of German decreases and English increases.

  • At all times there is strict division of languages and teachers never mix or translate during instruction.

Starting in kinder, students receive 30 minutes of oral instruction in  English at a designated time.

  • Annually a greater percentage of English is added, until, by 5th grade, instruction is evenly divided between the two languages.

  • Formal literacy instruction in English generally begins in third grade, although students are exposed to oral and print English from the beginning.

What's new?

Playing a game

*          In September 2008 25 children started in the new German-American Immersion Kindergarten

*          There are two teachers:

*                      - Frau Ophoven Haynes, a German 2 years fresh from Germany, ample experience in teaching German as a world language in several countries

*                      - Herr Alkofer, an American who studied German in the US and taught in the American school system

*          The student teacher ratio is ideal and it really shows in the progess students are taking each day

*          Of 25 children only two speak German, 3 understand a little

Why do parents believe German is a good idea?

*          They are convinced early foreign language learning makes a crucial difference in their children's life

Where are the children today?

*          Students sing German songs

*          They repeat sentences

*          And start to react and speak in the target language

How does Immersion work?

*          Teaching is according to California standards

*          90% of the classes are in German, 10% in English

*          The more German the children speak, the more English rather than German will be spoken

*          50 / 50 % mix of languages is considered to be ideal over time

*          Subjects finally will be taught in eitherlanguage, following an alternating rythm

Sponsors

*          Support for the Glendale Foreign Language Academy

*          Typical German teaching material and books are sponsored by private parties and a German Government Agency

School District Offers More Opportunities for Kids

*          The district offers along with German several other early foreign languages

*          There is ongoing planning for a Glendale Middle school combinig all early languages

*          Eventually these advanced language programs will funnel into a highschool specializing in foreign languages

*          Students will certainly speak and write one foreign language fluently and possibly be able to learn a third language
